So sure, you're cutting out bad calories and reducing overall intake, but you're also starving your body of vital nutrients and vitamins. 1200 calories seems excessively low to me as well. I started a weight loss diet/workout plan and lost 25 lbs in 3 months by working out 3 times a week for 0.5-1 hr and eating 2000calories a day. Granted, I have a decent metabolism, but that is moot when you're talking this kind of calorie cut coupled with exercise. I went from gaining weight at 2500 calories a day to losing at 2000 calories a day. It's not so much about the amount of calories you take in per day, but rather what is in those calories. Please don't limit yourself to less than 1500 calories a day (that's 3 500 calorie meals which is a lot of you design your diet correctly). I wouldn't ever go that low. It is dangerous and can have some serious health effects.
My advice is to talk to a trainer about your goals in fitness and have them design the right diet for you. Don't just go mindlessly cutting calories and assuming you are going to lose weight in a healthy manner. Very rarely is just cutting calories an effective way to lose weight. You're also going to have to couple your new found food regimen with a workout plan as well. Typically complex movements that stimulate multiple groups of muscles at once are the best way to go, because after all, the more muscle you recruit for a movement, the more calories you burn, and hence the more weight you "lose".
sorry for the ranting, to address your original question in the post: If you're going to start a diet/workout program to lose weight, stick to it! The hardest part is continuing to abide by the rules you set for yourself, but the end always justifies the means in this case. In general, be happy with who you are, and don't be so worried about what everyone else thinks of you! So what if you have a few extra pounds? If you're a kind, respectful person, noone who is worth hanging out with will give a shit how much you weigh. So do it for YOU, but don't base your decision on your fear of other people's opinions.
