they're all mechanically identical; it's the electronics that are different (iirc). pretty sure there's no difference sohc to dohc, so just stick to obd II years and you should be fine.
Thanks...I appreciate the info..

From my own personal research on this subject I found that
91 SOHC and DOHC is one part number
92 SOHC and DOHC is one part number
93 SOHC and DOHC is one part number
94 SOHC and DOHC is one part number
95-99 SOHC is one part number
95-99 DOHC is one part number

i stand corrected. thanks brian. 91-94's are only interchangable within the same year. 95-99's only interchangable within year group and valvetrain.
I actually had a thread started on 3si awhile back trying to get definitive answers so people wouldn't be guessing anymore. It really didn't go anywhere and I found most of the information on my own.
Now just because the part numbers are the same or different doesn't mean there will or wont be compatibility issues. Thats like the whole ECU or MAS thing.
I just wanted to make sure I shared the info I found.
and unfortunately, that's what i've discovered about mitsubishi transmissions. you can find a LOT of data on the engines & blocks; but there isn't nearly as much on the transmissions. w4a33 can be either for 3/s or a DSM--there isn't anything to differentiate. even ATX dsm's have different transmissions.
i've actually wondered what else is possible for swaps; but lord only knows. mitsubishi makes a v5a51 which might potentially work on our engines too. and if i had unlimited, "nelson-like" funds, i might actually explore that road.
Yea, DSM's are just as picky on what ATX's fit. I had a 93 Eclipse ATX about 10 years back. Transmission went out on it and I luckily had a warranty that came with the car. The shop and warranty company tried like hell to located a used replacement and were unable to. They ended up doing a rebuild.
It was about a year later my brother had a 93 Talon DL. Same 1.8 ATX drivetrain as my Eclipse. The trans went on it. We located a transmission for it and were informed that it had to be from a 93 1.8 or it wouldn't work. Thats why there was so much trouble finding one for my Eclipse.
no wonder mitsu went down in flames. they could have done a LOT of product simplification.
