Thread: Center Gauge Pod removal without taking the dash out !!!

I did mine (1st gen without airbag). I managed to get them out the bottom with the whole A/C, vents, & Stereo removed. I did that after I removed BOTH screws from the oil pressure gauge....
I wouldn't recommend this job to anyone. It was a royal PITA. ... and when people ask me to do it on their cars, I immediately refuse.....

On a 1st gen you can use a dremel to notch out a part of the dash behind the instrument cluster to give you more room. Once you have that out you can at least get your hand back there.

This Edit: without cutting part of the dash out anyway.

    Good write up!

I've accomplished this on a 1g twice. The first time I didn't bust a hole behind the main gauge cluster, I think I wormed it out through the center vent position, and then out the A/C and radio opening. It was a total PITA, and took me forever! The second time I took some pliers and a steak knife and precisely cut me a hole behind the main gauge cluster (ripped the fuck outta it). MUCH easier that way haha

Did mine the same way. Never touched the airbag.

looks good, imo I've always thrown 60mm gauges right in the stock holes vs. cutting and putting 52mm in the housing. 60mm fits amazingly perfectly, you can angle them a little to your liking, and have quick access should you have an issue or want to switch one out.

I will be doing this soon in my 94 VR4 to swap in a non turbo cluster so I can have an ammeter. Turbo gauge is disconnected anyway as it can't measure 17psi and is going on the A pillar.

Anyone know how much trouble it is going to be to get a signal to the ammeter?

    There's no replacement for displacement.

you mean the volt-meter? i'm guessing it's probably wired already, you'd just have to run terminal connections to the gauge.

Yes, volt meter. Thanks, I was hoping that was the case.
