Timing belt 101

I don't see anything wrong with doing it like that, other than potentially over tightening which can cause the belt to wear premature. What I did for a makeshift tool was use an old socket, welded some small doweling onto it using my old tensioner pulley as a jig, and threw it into some cold water while it was still hot to temper it. I have used it many times and continue to do so!

I've heard of some people using those hooks that go in peg boards as a makeshift tensioner tool...we've got a bunch of those at work maybe I'll give one of those a shot.
