Thank you all for the kind words. We're still here in San Antonio and won't be leaving until early Sunday morning but it's kind of odd to think that's he's gone. We sat around after the service and chose from all the quilts that my grandmother made for the year - all 26 of them and then told of some of the things that we learned from Papa. Many of them were normal things that grandparents teach their grandkids. Things like not chomping your ice and chewing with your mouth closed. I tried so hard to think of something he had taught me that hadn't been mentioned and in a flash it came to me.

Papa drove all over Fisher County and along the way he would pick things up on the side of the road that most people just leave there.

The man probably collected thousands of them that fell off passing semi's. So the thing I remember him teaching me was that there was no such thing as a rubber hook strap you couldn't use.

Everyone laughed, and I felt much better.

    Jeff,

So sorry for the loss of your Grandfather. Sounds like he had a full productive life filled with honor until the very end. His legacy now is in his extended family and offspring . From the outside looking in - he's not doing too bad.

    This ^

Mine bought a few sets of pliers purely for reworking the hooks if some idiot closed them.

There were always several of them (hooks and pliers) laying about his vise/hook-rehab station.

He also taught me how to straighten nails.

I must have been 12 years old before I got to pound a new nail, ffs.

Idiots, simply by being idiots, seem capable of achieving randomly bad things that are beyond the imaginings of sensible people.
