A Viper was supposed to cost between $30,000 to $40,000?!

When it came out it was a performance bargain. MSRP on the '92 was $50k. Not that many, if any, dealers let them roll off the lot for that cheap.

“The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the presidency. It will be easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails us. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president.” -- Author Unknown

A local owner has a 91 "official" car. Thats what most people will have. Someone did get a one of the pace cars from IMS within the last year.

Its a cool bit or history.

such epic fail. UAW ftmfl. nothing but japanese engines have run in the IRL in the last 10 years.

chevy may have been great back in the day, but that day has passed. honda will be coming to nascar, i guarantee it. nissan probably will too. eventually the "i'm going to take my ball and go home" attitude is going to sink the original "big three".

every time i read about this event, it brings a tear to my eye. the 3/s got f'd. it was the only "japanese supercar" to pace the 500; and it's also the most forgotten. damn i really want to punch somebody in the face right now.

I couldn't agree more. The Viper is certainly an amazing car, but I always just shake my head when I think about how much bitching the UAW had to have done for them to force Chrysler to rush a car to production. At the same time though, I think the fact that the Stealth actually wasn't the official pace car probably adds value to the ones that were produced as such.

Uh, you are aware this was 20 years ago, right?

As much as I loathe the UAW for what they've done to the Big Three, perhaps their sentiments were right. As you said, all the engines have been Japanese in the series for the better part of a decade. At least someone was trying to hold on to "America's Race" back then. Can't say I fault them for it. I think IRL is a joke now because their 100% Honda - I can't wait for the return to competition between manufacturers. Right now it's dumb.

i know that was 20 years ago. it was also less than a decade before chevy pulled out. i don't think ford or chrysler were even competing at that time. so yes, utter bullcrap.

if you want REAL mfg competition, the grand am series is gold.
