    Turbo Swap a DSM

In the summer I got my cousin a 96 GSX. DAMN good looking car in beautiful shape but the son of a bith doesn't boost... For shit... When we first got it it would go up to about 3000rpm or so (give or take a few hundred) and then it would fall on its face like it hits fuel cut. Black crap shoots outta the tail pipe when this happens. The guy that I bought the car from said it has a 16g on it, which is probably a ebay knock off. When we put in new spark plugs they turned black in two pulls. So I'm pretty sure the turbo is shit.

Somethings that we have found out over time with the car is that
    1. It has a 1g motor in it.
    2. It had some boost leak issues but for the most part they have been found and adjusted.
    3. We think a trubine wheel shot out of the tail pipe 3-4 weeks ago.
    4. The car has a bitch cluth feel compared to the VR-4 (nothing to do with anything important I just don't really enjoy driving that car lol)

Anyway because I haven't really got a chance to look at the cars turbo set up do you have to drop the engine to swap out the turbo or can it be done easily with the engine still in the car.

    Thanks guys.

DSM's are very easy to work on, turbo swaps dont take much time at all.

If its got a 16g its probably hitting cut from to much boost.
16g's tend to boost creep which will also cause fuel cut depending.
If the turbine wheel somehow came out of the turbo then dont drive it anymore.
DSM's dont have a clutch assist like the 3S so its a different feeling, especially with a upgraded clutch.

If you need any help let me know, i had my hands on plenty of DSM's

-Ricer Evo 8: 8.75 @ 166 Best MPH of 167. Quickest 4G63 Powered Evo in The US!!!
-Chris Cessna's Stock short block Evo 8: 9.76@150 Worlds Fastest Stock Motor Evo 8 and First Stock Block In The 9's!
-Shawna's DD Evo 8: 9.97@143.88 Best MPH of 145 Full leather interior, A/C, navigation, stock brakes, cruisin 9's in style
-Cory's Stock 7 bolt talon: 10.3@136 No crank walk here...
-STM Stock turbo/motor Stealth RT: 10.95@127 Worlds Quyickest/Fastest and most powerful Stock turbo/ motor 3S
-James STM built Pump gas Evo8 stock motor: 10.2@137 Stock long block, and only on pump gas!
    -Mike Faggiano Evo3 16g stock motor 1g 11.0@124 just a 16g knockin on 10's door.
    And the list goes on...

So if the car has been being driven could that be causing engine damage? The next thing I'm thinking about is because this DSM has a 1g engine in it. I found a turbo locally the guy is selling for $80 he says its a TD05H. I don't think he is exactly sure what it is cause when I asked him about it he said it is "probably" a 16g. So its either this or a crappy ebay turbo.

Get a picture of the turbo and post it up here. We can tell you what it is. I always hate buying used turbos. It's always someone else's junk.

As for driving around with a blown turbo. I wouldn't drive it around if it blew a turbine wheel. That just means that there is oil pouring into the exhaust. If you say your spark plugs are turning black immediately, I would pull the intercooler pipe off of the turbo and check for oil. If there is no oil, then I would do a compression test. A blown turbine wheel shouldn't cause your spark plugs to foul out.

It is probably a used 14b, but without mods that is more than enough. Because it probably doesnt have fuel mods and with the 16g as soon as you hit about 16 psi or less, it will fuel cut right away because that it much more air then you have fuel for. And I would say that is what is happening since it should be full spool (or at least enough to fuel cut) by low 3000 rpms. I would take it easy til you get injectors, pump, ect.

ALso, the turbo swap is simple. Unbolt the downpipe, take out radiator, unbolt turbo oil and coolant likes, take off intake piping and intercooler piping, unplug o2 sensor wiring, unbolt all the exhaust manifold bolts, and pull the turbo out with the exhaust manifold, o2 housing, and turbo all as one piece.

    VERY easy.

    92 Eagle Talon TSI AWD Auto = 10.61@127.8 (1.4 60ft)
    94 3000gt SL 8:1TT 5spd getrag = 11.87@123 (1.8 60ft)
    91 3000gt VR4 13gs = 11.61@115 (1.59 60ft)

To get at the last exhaust mani bolt (all the way to the drivers side) you might need to take of power steering pump and set it to the side depending if it has power steering or if you have a real small socket.

There are walkthroughs on vfaq.com for dsm stuff as well.

Again with the pics and posting I'm not that great at that lol. But anyway I'll call they guy tomorrow. I've been in a 14b powered GST before and a 14b civic (fast piece of shit) a 14b would be more then enough power for my lil cousin. But if its blown can I get it rebuilt easily? I doubt there's a shop around me... Well theres Dynamic Racing about 3 hours away....

But as for the oil problem there is alot of oil sitting infront of the turbine wheel when you take off the intake pipe. So I'm willing to bet its the turbo. Still haven't been able to check for shaft play because my cousin never stays in one place long enough for the damn car to cool down. I really want this car to get some boost it looks TOOOOOOOOOO nice to run as shitty as it does.

Just get another one, they are very easy to find, or even get a new MHI one.

Sounds like you may be running super rich too, if you're shooting black smoke out the exhaust on boost...prob why your plugs are fouling so quickly as well
