    Broken Ringland?

    Alittle history first:

Rebuilt the motor about 3000-5000 miles ago (stock 70k mile pistons) and blew the rear turbo. Converted to single turbo and still on stock pcv system but didnt have the rear valve cover connected to anything (like the hose that connects the bubble on the stock system).
Well when i took it for a ride, it shot the dipstick tube out (or maybe i didnt have it COMPLETELY down) and oil was all over the underside of my hood and everything in my engine bay. I got fed up and went back to twins and i have a new set of stockers right now and forgot about this issue.

Today, i was talking to a buddy about my car and he brought up the blowby issue i had. Im thinking it was from the stupid amounts of cfms the turbo moved and the stock pcv system not being able to keep up. He thinks it might be a broken ringland.

Im hoping hes wrong but i dont have all the parts needed to have the car running to go see.. (hoping to have it running monday or tuesday)

If it is im looking at .15 over Weisco forged pistons 8.0:1 or 8.3:1 from IPS even though i don't really want to do that or have the money to do it right now

Have you done a compression test? Are you getting any smoke?

It wasnt smoking at all on twins (except rich smoke) and when I blew the turbo it smoked and it smoked when I had the single on but I believe it was rich smoke too. I did a compression test a while back when I was on twins about 1500 miles after the rebuild and it was good across the board. Ill probably do a compression test tomorrow

Ok remeber these numbers are on a cold motor so they arent as good as a regular test. The front bank was all about the same around 135ish. Cyl 2 read 148. 4 read 120. 5 read 135. Gonna try to do a oil trick on number 4 to see if I'll get a better result which is the only one I'm worried about. Although I was reading up on broken ringlands last night and it looks like you would have horrible lowwww compression...

If it's the top ringland not necessarily, when I ripped my engine appart I had a broken one with no sign of damage anywhere in the chamber or head which told me someone obviously and idiodically just put it back in. When I had problems with mine I did the compression test and that piston only showed 3psi less than the norm if I remeber correctly. There may still be hope! It's cold here lol, but nice in the summer.

My old motor had a broken ring land between the upper and lower compression rings on one piston. It would spit a quart of oil out the dipstick tube whenever I went into boost. I never did a compression test though.

You could try a leak down test and see if you hear air coming from anywhere such as the crankcase.

Im pretty sure i dont have a broken ringland.. Theres almost no way possible. But if it is, i guess ill find out later when it blows the fuck up or shoots oil out the dipstick tube again. Then oh well, time for forged.
