Data logging?

Ok, I'm new to the tuning thing. Just did TT conversion on sl and its almost time to get her back on the road. So, data logging? What exactly is it? I know its used to monitor the engine knock, which is the main reason I want one. Also where can I get one cheap? Been on eBay and I seen them for like $100. Doesn't seem bad, but yea I would like some input on this.

What year is your car? 100 bucks could be pretty cheap. 3sx just had a sale on the palm ones.
I have a Hand Held Halo for my first gen and I like it, software is great, took a while to ship from england though.

Back when I had a stock ECU I downloaded the TMO datalogger for free and used that on a laptop running Windows. I just had to make a cable for <$1. That would be an option unless you're looking for something to leave in the car 24/7.

I'm waiting for a copy of Evo-scan from GZP. from what I've seen when my car was on the dyno, it seems extremely user friendly and I think the disk is around $100 (though I'd like to think you could d/l it for free somehow on the net). But it basically creates a log of your car's computer data influding afr, knock, pulse-width, etc.

Just what 3kvt said. You log in order to, like you mentioned, monitor for knock in your motor as well as being able to watch fuel trim, tps, timing, voltage, etc (pretty much allows you to view all of your car's sensors real time). There are a bunch of different options for how to log. Personally, I snagged a Palm from eBay (there are tons of different ones to choose from) and then grabbed the logging cable and software from these guys http://automotive.miragecorp.com/index.html . I tried using mmCD before buying the mirage corp software but I was never able to get mmCD working correctly. Now my current software is awesome. Only problem I have run into is that when converting the files to an excel format for easier viewing I have to convert them on a system w/windows XP and then shoot them back to my computer. GL w/the searching.

I posted a GB thread for Evoscan cables. You just need to buy the sw from Evoscan for $25. My setup supports 94 through 99 which use the 16 pin OBDII connector. Of course 94/95 aren't true OBDII protocol but they still work.

I can make a cable for the 1G for $25.75 shipped. I love using the Hand Held Halo software personally.

I would like to know more about this. So you made your own cable? Might not be a bad idea for the time being but I do want a palm for the car in the long run. Also I have a 93 still on the na ecu.
