One more difficulct noise to track down!!

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Hey all,
My car recently developed a strange noise. Sounds like its coming from under the car. Sometimes it clicks or chirps then itll schreech and squeel then click again. It only does it while moving, not free revving. Does NOT matter if im in gear or not, or if clutch is in or not. It usually happens on accel or decel. But does happen while coasting or maintaining any speed. Definitly not a belt noise!

First I thought carrier bearings. The rubber part is shot but can't tell how the actual bearing part is.
So I raised her up and had someone drive it but then it wouldnt make the noise, BUT I did notice that my Xfer case is now leaking and was about 1/4 of a quart low. Topped it off and is still maiking noise. Last time I took my Xfer case of the trans output shaft was worn in the center of the splines but wasn't stripped or worn badly but definitly at the end of its service.

    Now what?
    What else can I check?
What can I check on the transfer case to see if thats the cause?

Naw, its not brakes, belts, wheel bearings, its definitly a driveline noise. I might get a sound clip tommorrow. Ive heard some people describing the same noise, one ended up being a loose nut in the tcase and the other carrier bearings. Really hoping its the latter.

If it does it during a load, it could be the carrier bearings wore out some and the driveshaft is shifting a bit when it is getting torqued, hitting a heat shield or something. Mine did that and it was incredibly annoying until I bent back the heat shield.

I have new carrier bearings but am REALLY procrastinating doing it :/

I should just do it when I get the turbos rebuilt and pull the engine and do the solid motor mounts at the same time.

Hmmm...thats a pretty good possibility. It doesn't seem like it would be THAT bad but definitly a project....my problem is I dont have a heated garage right now so ill have to set something up. Your gonna pull the engine just for the mounts? I know it makes it easier to get to the rear but in the end wouldnt it be a lot more work?

Btw where'd you buy the carrier bearings from?

I bought them right from cherry hill mitsu, they were like 70 dollars a piece.

Yea I am going to replace the turbos and install the bellhousing brace, too, so might as well pull it all and do it on a stand.

Yah thats where I was planning on getting them from.
Yah I suppose then its worth it.

    UPDATE:
I crawled under my car to check the carrier bearings again (which took some balls cuz its 20 degrees out and we are currently having an ice storm) I dont think its rubbing on any heat sheilds cuz I couldnt get the drive shaft anywhere near one and the shields are all rusty and i would think if it was contacting it would wear off some of the rust. So I sprayed the bearing down with wd40 and it seemd to help with the noise....but it didnt go away. O maybe its just my imagination because I want it to be the carrier bearings lol
Looks like ill be bringing her to the dealer in hopes of getting a new transfer case.

Good job thinking outside of the box! But it wasn't that...
Update: Brought her to the dealership. They argued with me a bit about the recall but after having an understanding I left the car overnight. They just called me and said that most of the noise is coming from the Tcase so they ordered it and it should be done by tuesday so thats awesome! The dude also said that some noise is coming from "rust chunks ratling around inside my driveshaft" How does that work??

I thought they didn't have to do the recall any more...

Rust in the driveshaft eh? That's new to me.
