What about a bad wrist pin ? A lifter will be more of a tick that is easy to describe or diagnose. You said its more of a whirling sound, could it be a exhaust or intake leak ?
I havent checked the timing to see if the belt could have slipped at all. That'll be part of this weekends project. I'll have a look see at the pistons and connecting rods to see if anything looks messed up
