There's nothing special about the chinese subs; most modern diesel-electrics are able to run much quieter than their nuclear-powered counter parts, and thus avoid detection much more easily.

electric subs are inherently much quieter than nuclear boats because the electric engine has no major moving parts that generate a signature noise underwater.

nuclear boats on the other hand have to run cooling systems, and each boat has a specific acoustic signature given off by this "noise" that can give away the type and class of the submarine.

I used to know all the active carriers by name. I remember them commissioning the GHW Bush, how did I forget that they decommissioned the Kitty Hawk, (the only non-nuclear carrier once JFK was retired).

Stupid reddit made it look like the story was new.

I dont think I should have to pay for my car insurance, but I do anyways....

With 20 people and a few weeks training me and my buddies could surface a Diesel-electric in the middle of a battle group. Dont take that away from our military thinking its pointless to spend the money. Our Navy is the most capable and powerful force on the planet, bar none, anyone who wants to step up against us is in for a world of hurt.

I just wish they would make modern battleships :/

Oh yea wait till ~ 2030 when the new SSBN's are in service.
The new Virginia class subs were designed in the 90's, and are the most ultra modern subs, the new ballistic subs will probably be designed this decade and the next one, imagine what they can do.

I'm surprised that submarines haven't gone beyond simple nuclear-steam turbine power to RTGs yet.
"This is a ridiculous cause and effect suggestion."
"Yeah, kind of like the sun rising and then morning happening, eh? What are they trying to pull on us?"

"If I wanted to hear from an asshole, I'd fart into a microphone."

"It's easy. Take the last f*ck, and let it go, and thus you shall have no more f*cks to give."

Are they able to make 200+ Megawatts with them yet? In 10 years maybe. I dont know what they are planning to propel the next generation SSBN's, I'm just a pump and valve mechanic, I wont know that information until the general public does, but even if they dont upgrade, our pressurized sea water nuke plants have been incredibly reliable for over 40 years. I would not think the Navy would shy away from such a proven system for no good reason (not to say a new plant isnt a good reason ).
