Damn! I knew that I would be getting off too easily with those prices being so low. Maybe I will hold out then for a bit and rock my Radeon HD 3800 for now and see how it does w/the new CPU and goodies. If I can't get a much better card for under a bill (I know, dreaming, right?) then I might as well hold off for the time being unless something killer pops up this Black Friday.

I am an ATI guy and would agree with the 6850.

i finally made the ATi plunge about 8 months back (from two 9600GT's overclocked % SLI) to two ATi HD 5850's for x-fire, and they're spectacular. I ran into only one driver problem which was quickly remedied with a new driver update. Really, they don't have the same driver issues that they had years ago.

My 5850's were phenomenal bang for the buck (much more so than the 480s that were available) and the new HD 6800's are even better. I paid about 300 for each of my cards, the new 6850s are about 200 each. Even if you're doing just one card, it's totally worth it to spend a few extra dollars. Do it once, do it right.

Remember the 6850 = 5770 when comparing model numbers. The 6900 series is the replacement for the 5800 series. The 5850/5870 cars are still faster than the 6800 cards that were just released.

They pulled an nVidia on this coming release. There's been a lot of grumbling from the hardware sights I frequent when it comes to the naming change, as it stinks of marketing getting control over something they shouldn't have had. The 58XX replacement won't be released until next year.
