Pretty sure my Alt. just shit the bed.

Just cranked it for the first time in 2 weeks. Drove it up the street to get gas and dinner. Decide it's a bit chilly so I turn on the heat. I hear a funny thunk in the engine bay, feel it through the brake pedal and the batt light comes on. Volts are sitting just under 12.

    Bad alt?

Check the belt. It might have gone missing.

And great Tool reference in the title!

good call. though everything else was pumping right a long.. but that would account for the thump.

Definately inspect the belt, but if the belt is still there, Take out a volt meter and measure the output of the alternator before replacing it. Don't want to go wasting money if it's not the problem.

Aside from the thump sound, check the IOD and fuse if you don't see any other issues. There's a clip-on cover that you can measure alt voltage at right in front of the fan, but BE CAREFUL and use an extended probe; fans do nasty stuff to bare hands.
