I like both drummers, they're both amazing in what they do. When Portnoy left, I thought he could never be replaced. But Mangini can play all the Portnoy parts just like Mike did, and his own style adds a little different sound to the bands new stuff. If you've seen them live with Mangini, he blew me away when he did the snare fill in A Fortune in Lies with just one hand. Mangini was once the Guinness world record holder for fastest drummer.

I take nothing away from Mangini's ability to play, but I feel that Portnoy's writing has a more dynamic feel/feeling? It may be that the older stuff has more emotional impact on me personally, I don't know.
