    opinions on manual racks.

I hate doing this dual post thing but it seems like more of the brains came over here but theres more people on the other side to get opinions. But anyways..
Well i blew a line on my power steering and created a huge mess of oil all over the place. I cannot stand oil leaks and would like to eliminate the system all together. There isnt a line/hose under my hood that isnt SS braided or reinforced silicone. Except my PS system.

I drive my car as a DD its got average lightning mods/deletions. If i could put a weight to it id say around 3600-3650lbs (empty) I do a lot of city driving and a lot of highway.

My question is with those of you with manual racks that DD your car how do you like them. would you do it again? or would you just replace the leaking PS line in my case.

    PROs
    get rid of 4WS
less chance of it leaking again
    better feel
front and rear steering elimination is good weight savings.
    reliability
    CONs
    slow speeds
    parking
    wider tires

I figured now would be the time to do it
    Fully Forged, 16G's ect.

I've essentially had manual steering for the past few months. I cut off my PS belt once it decided to rub on the timing cover and tear, haven't gotten around to installing the new belt yet, but I have no beef with driving it as is, other than the obvious parking difficulties, but you get used to it very quickly and compensate with wider turn-ins

First off, its not wise to drive around with not functioning PS system.

They don't make manual racks for the 3/s. You can finagle a 1G DSM rack to fit and extend the drivers shaft an inch or two to reach that knuckle assembly, but that's really your only option for a true manual conversion. LethalVR4 from IA was making racks for a short time but I have no idea if he still does anymore.

It's best to have some rack made up with a shorter clock ratio so to make turning the steering wheel easier while the car isn't rolling. You won't really notice much of a difference while the car is moving.

PMP was converting our racks to manual. Not sure if they still are.

Other platforms that convert an existing power rack to manual take it all apart, cut some slots in the piston seal so grease can move from one side to the other and fill the rack with grease. Obviously cap the holes where the lines were that you removed.

Do you have stock width tires? Only reason I haven't done it is I run 265's all around, and I spent a lot of time in my younger days driving an old 300zx with manual steering and didn't like it. That car had 225's up front and was lighter.

Yes, stock 245...which do seem plenty wide with a manual rack

Did you use a PMP rack or did you convert it to manual yourself? If yourself, can you give some details? Thanks!

I ended up doing it myself...
The gist of doing it is to take the sealing components out, seal up un-needed holes, and using a good lube.
I'll see if I can find a couple of the links I was referenced.
