    Expertise needed II

The victim, I mean vehicle, is a 93 Stealth RT/TT. The radio is a digital display, 6CD changer controlling stock, OEM Mitsu radio out of some Stealth/VR4. Since I successfully used the 94's VIN to get the radio code, maybe that's the source of the radio, really don't know. Anyway, I think previous owner of the Stealth told me the radio wasn't original to the car.

Now for the expertise needed part:

Everything associated with the radio works perfectly EXCEPT: no sound in FM mode. All the neat sound control features (venue/music style settings) work. Antenna controls work. AM works. CD works. Volume controls work (except in FM mode, of course).

Okay all you electronic savvy youngsters, somebody help me out here.................if needed, I can pull the radio and provide model and serial numbers, as well as the 94 VR4 VIN. Let me know..........

Random thought (probably unrelated to ANYthing)...................the FM scan feature doesn't stop at any stations, including stations that work in my 95 VR4 when the antenna is down............. is it possible that the issue is there is zero FM signal but full AM signal from the antenna to the radio?????????????????????? If it's not raining tomorrow, I will connect a known good antenna to the radio................will post results................

But you smart guys still need to help me out here................

This is an uneducated memory, but I believe that the way the radio waves work its possible to get AM signals without the antenna hooked up whereas FM needs the antenna. I'd check and make sure the antenna is properly connected at the back of the radio and at the antenna itself.

    I'll 3td that opinion.

Check the antenna connections and continuity on the cable from the antenna to the radio.

Connection checked at radio. Since CD works, wife is taking it today, so tomorrow is soonest I'll get to troubleshoot. Antenna goes up and down, so that part has power and ground. FM stations in the area work with the OEM antenna down. I have a new OEM antenna, can I connect it at the back of the radio and ground and test antenna that way?

My money is on a bad FM tuner. Easiest fix is to swap out the unit for a different or newer one. Most post 80's electronics cost more to repair than replace. So unless you really really to want to keep the stock unit, I would start shopping for a new one.

Got a chance to connect the known good antenna. Plugged antenna pigtail directly into back of radio, eliminating antenna extension wire from back of car to front of car. Attached ground wire to radio mount. FM scan still doesn't stop at any position including known stations. HOWEVER.................................instead of total silence with radio tuned to known strong FM station.................we have......................STATIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is that improvement??? Is it sufficient progress to warrant replacing the antenna???? Especially with my VERY LIMITED mobility and pain limited work time...I get about 2-3 hours work time in any one session before pain drives me into bed for a few hours.........

Kevin, if I get this radio fixed before your windshield washers work, I think you should buy me a 12 pack of Michelob Ultra.....................who's with me??????????????????????????
