Picking up another VR4 tomorrow want some ideas on Oil Pressure

    Oy!
Been a bit but I’m picking up a running driving VR4 1993 to restore tomorrow. Now the owner states that if you don’t run 15w40 the factory oil gauge like to drop to the bottom. Now car drove and ran fine. I know the factory oil pressure gauge is junk but any ideas on why it would do this with a thinner weight? I live in MI and it’s going to be cold soon so want to nip this in the but quick. Was thinking of installing a different Pressure gauge and then go from their. Maybe oil pump? This is not my first TT just this is a new issue for me.
    Thanks
    Ry

1st, install a real gauge, even if it's a temp testing gauge. I personally will tell you if it's under 15 psi hot oil pressure the engine needs rebuilt. I can almost guarantee the bearings are shot in that engine, with 5-30 idle pressure should be over 25 psi.

I often roll new bearings in during a 120k service... The mains are hammered in close to half of the ones I see.

If the gauge is hitting the floor and the idiot light isn't coming on, I would suspect the gauge accuracy. +1 on checking it with a real gauge.

Yuhp that’s what I was thinking too. I’ll baby it around and order a nice oil pressure gauge for it.
