    Gas Pump Credit Card Skimmers...

Cross posting & spreading the knowledge:

A local tech company that I've done alot of business with out of Boulder, CO called Sparkfun worked with law enforcement to help them reverse engineer the technology that some thieves are using at the gas pumps to steal your credit cards. The tech is not all the same, but a common technique according from sparkfun is to embed a unit in the gas pump that stores your captured credit card information in solid state memory and then uses Bluetooth to transmit the information to the thieves when they visit the pump to pick up your info.

Sparkfun built a "scanner" app for an android phone that you can use when your at the gas pump and if "sees" the common blue tooth signature that some of these skimmers use - it warns you.

For information on the app see this Sparkfun blog post:

If your into the tech side of it see this deeper article that talks about the work sparkfun did:

Nice, what would be nicer if they put in the code in their app to send the "delete stored card info" command........that way we could go around and just broadcast the delete code at every gas station we visit. Or send the "E" disable command, that would be better.
