    Oil filter change without draining?

    Hi Guys,

I am trying to relieve the lifter tick on my TT and I read that the stock Mitsu filter might offer a benefit over the mobil1 filter I am currently running due to less restrictive flow. I only have a few hundred miles on the current oil. I believe I can just swap the filters with minimal loss of oil, can anyone confirm?

    Thanks

Yes you can change the filter without changing oil. You will loose between a quarter of a quart to a quart of oil. Once you change the filter start the car for just a few seconds then shut it off and check oil level and top off with what is needed.

Not going to solve your issue, though.

Need 3rd gen lifters... I know. But, theoretically, less of a pressure drop across the filter could have a positive effect.

Changing the filter in the hopes of increasing pressure to stop lifter tick is a waste of time and money.
You might have better chance idling with Seafoam in the oil (repeated several times)

Also, 3rd gen lifters aren't this magical tick cure and will in fact cause worse ticking if your oil pressure drops too low (or in my case, dry starts from sitting for years). The ticking is caused by the lifters being stuck and unable to expand properly to eliminate valve lash. The hole in the top is where oil leaves the lifter, so it has no effect in it's ability to "inflate". Honestly there is no magical cure besides cleaning them out either with additives or manually. Also, despite Mitsubishi's service limit on oil pressure, hot idle should be over 20 psi.
