Firefly 6S gopro knockoff review kinda thing

Just putting this here so maybe people googling will find this info useful.

First thing is first, if you buy it from www.gearbest.com, assume you won't get a warranty with it. One of mine broke within 2 days of owning it and it took like 8 months to get my replacement, and a lot of BS including shipping it back to china. They then deleted my review, and I'm sure they delete every negative reviews on their site. I would buy from someone else

The good: video and audio quality are great, you really do get gopro hero 3 black video for $70. Best for shooting things at 1080p and 30 or 60FPS. A lot less crying involved when the cam decides to launch itself from whatever its mounted on and fly across the race track or into the lake.

The bad: Does not shoot actual 4K video, but pretty close, looks good enough. Most reviews will point this out. What nobody else says is it does not shoot 120FPS at 720, it's really just doubled up frames, complete waste to shoot in this mode. Also, it's Chinese, so......you might end up with a dud. The phone app sucks, and wifi kills the battery life, but neither effects me.

The end result? Excellent cheap almost disposable camera for mounting on your car for getting good 1080p video for turning yourself into a youtube hero. Probably best for hacking for remote activation, since it comes with a lead for wiring it to drones, someday I'll make it so when the car starts, it automatically starts recording. It fails at slow motion, so don't even bother, it will only do 60 FPS.

Most of the ones I have found under $100 that shoot supposed 4k are only at 10 or 15 fps which is useless. 4k is overrated now anyways. Only about 3% of the population can even watch 4k so why bother. 1080p is the majority. Unless your doing Super high end video editing and rendering there is no use for 4k. Hell even high end studios that shoot in RAW, 5k and 4k still downsample to 1080p for distribution after editing is done.

As for cameras, I found those with the OV4689 Omnivision sensor have better colors and depth than that of the ones with a Sony IMX117 which is what GoPro usually uses. I end up doing more color correction with the GoPro than I do with my Chinese knock off camera with the Omnivision sensor.

I use an IPM Camera that I got from Woot some time ago and love it. Cheap "about $60.00" and it records great. I use it for most of the footage for the series now that I have a good separate audio recorder.

Problem is it was a 2 day sale and they never listed it again after it sold out. Good luck finding them elsewhere as they are way overpriced on other stores.

Good thing is that there are a bunch of rebrands of the same camera made by the same company, example below.

Here is a good article going over the differences of the sensors and the false advertisement claims the companies make, Your Firefly S6 is listed on there as being a fake BTW....

Oh, I knew it was fake as being not a real 4K camera when I bought them, but I also seen side by side footage of it vs various generations of gopro which sold it to me, and for $72 abouts for the latest one I bought seemed like a fine deal for something that would probably get run over after falling off the roof of the car. It says 24 FPS at 4K but I never tested it, or recorded anything in 4K or 2.5K.

Now I'm searching for something that offers actual 240+fps without spending $400. I'm trying to find actual proof that the Yi 2 does.

Rifle bolt speed measurement. With my current cameras the bolt goes from closed to full open between frames, can't actually measure it's speed, need 4 frames of movement at least. I'm sure I can find more uses for it later.

I guess I'll update this, they did send me a replacement, which has been working, so now I have 2 of the cameras and like 3 or 4 batteries. Most of the videos on my channel recently are shot with one of them.

Personally I would avoid GearBest, but they are OK if you assume nothing comes with a warranty. Considering it's stock settings and no mods to the audio, pretty impressive with the sound quality and lack of wind noise compared to GoPro gen3.
