I've been thinking of project ideas for a MS CompSci degree I will be going for, and at first I was thinking about a homemade robotic auto painter. However, I think the cost of the robotic arm or setup would be too large and/or expensive to be practical.
However, I still want to paint my car myself one day and have little to no experience. I was thinking of aids thy could help an inexperienced person be able to gain "experience".
Do you guys think it would be a good idea to use Vive with Unreal Engine, use a 3D mode of a car, use a particle system, etc to simulate painting a car? It would help you and grade you on your speed, distance, angle, etc and give you visual feedback as well. It would also let you test colors on the car and get a nice 3D view of it.
Seems the controllers for Vive are a good shape to feel like a spray gun (minus the weight).
Using the same setup, I also wanted to use it to test an algorithm for coming up with an optimal spray gun path to cover the entire surface area in the event I come up with a robotic solution. It would be able to map out the path, and I could test it in action.
