I've got an HP Elitebook 2760p with a Core I7 in it that screams and it's three years old.
Not much into gaming laptops either, I never game on a laptop, I have a gaming PC for that.
I just can't get into gaming these days as the games are not really good anymore, they've re-made so many games that they are all the same, programmers get lazy and build terrible code that requires way more processing power and people have attention span issues, so the games lack good stories/plots.

Maybe I have a crap i5, but my i7 smokes it, and eats a snack doing so. Video editing is hungry for headroom. From all the reviews I have read on this one heat is not an issue, and it has a backup cooling system that has not been needed when bench marking at full resolution.
Overkill? Yup! The new GTX 980 for notebooks will handle 4k easily in dual display. Next on the list is the Samsung UN65JS9500.

What are you using to Benchmark? Prime94, Cinebench, PCMark?
I have benchmarked tons of stuff over the years and almost every laptop I have done with not stay full speed when under load. I can sit there and watch the clock speed being pulled back when it starts to get hot or when it is under severe load.
My elitebook won't pull speed, it stays solid until it just shuts off, which is dumb because the fan shuts off with the computer so now it's just heat soaking.
Ha ha... Just keeps going till thermal shutdown. May want to wire in a turbo timer to that thing to keep the fan going...
Not arguing the throttling at all. The bench marks I was speaking of were in newer reviews with the new skylake in them. I believe one of the review posted above mentions the addition of a "supercooling" system, or something like that, and that during the bench mark process there was no need to activate it as it stayed cool. That said, it will also be affected by time, and the amount of crap sucked through the system.
As I said it is overkill, but this is one of 2 I found that actually uses the equipment installed, and also can be upgraded with components not usually upgradable in a laptop. 200+W vid card power feed.
I think my next laptop will end up being something like an ultrabook with external GPU via Thunderbolt 3. Probably the best of both world scenario, to make it like a portable desktop (at an actual desk on the road).
Just got an UltraBook yesterday at work. Much better than any of the previous HP craptastics. T550 i7-5600U, SSD, Me likey!
