Here's a fun part, the twin scroll single wastegate configuration. This can be done but takes a bit of patience to get it to work correctly. A twin scroll has to keep both exhaust sides separate from each other all the way to the turbo. Using a singe gate means building a divider that will keep these apart until the gate begins to open. Here's a hot tip/theory. When the gate is closed, it's a twin scroll. When the gate begins to open it switches to a merge collector. Draw your own conclusions as to why this is cool.

Here's the gate I'm using. A water cooled Tial 38. In the previous pics you can see the mating surface for the valve itself. Going slow here was key to making it match up to the bottom of the valve. Grind a bit, test fit, repeat about a hundred times. LOL
Here's a shot of the whole thing after it's been finished back purge welded with that valve in place.

Then I wrapped the heck out all of the pipes. This is the titanium/crushed lava rock stuff. Used 3 of the 50 foot rolls for this. All of them were finished with a minimum of 2 passes, some places 3 to control the radiant heat. I also use actual titanium as additional heat shielding in places.

Here's a neat test vid of this stuff...

Wrap everything, get all of the shields on, including the one that protects the oil pump, install the intake piping..

I even opted to re-circulate the gate back into the side exit exhaust. Went so far to even polish the internal side of the exhaust. (just for the bling factor) The bummer is the majority of the piping and the turbo won't even be seen once the wheel well enclosure is put back on.

So there you have it, the better part of a 4 month project turned in reality. We had to make a number of changes to the tune just to get it to idle and see tip in correctly. It's a huge change in VE to say the least. Fired it up this last Saturday and really this video doesn't do it justice. It's wicked loud and sounds like a jet. We'll be hitting the dyno in the next couple of weeks to tune it with these changes as the start of the season is just around the corner. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the end results. With these changes I'm expecting a number of improvements, most of all spool time. I'm really happy to go from a pair of gates that had a set of 12 lb springs to a single with a 1.7 bar setup. First fire video below, after tuning changes of course...

Let me know your thoughts guys. Interested to hear them.

Amazing work Erron! Please keep us updated on how the setup works on the dyno and the track. This is a really interesting build.

    Hot dog! Love it.

They let you dump exhaust pre front wheel in the class(es) you run?

    Jeremy

Is there a phase two to this build then? How much more weight are you planning to add to the front corner?

  12. #19
Thanks Jeremy! Ya, they let us in the unlimited class. It's more of a noise thing than anything else. The Mazda's are leaps and bounds louder than I am though. They make my ears hurt as I go by. LOL

Mdcrose, I don't plan on adding any weight to that corner. It was more of a "since I have to put it somewhere, that's the best for the weight", if that makes sense.

Looks great! Sadly there is no more "Like" button on the forum or you would have a few

Water cooled wastegate eh? Interesting. I dig the merge you made also. Is that a "spacer" in between the two sides to fill a gap?
