    Help me fix my Laptop!

    Hi all,

I don't like to admit my shortcomings... but there is no way around it. I have no effing idea what I'm doing when it comes to diagnosing/fixing computer issues.

I bought a laptop about 2 years ago... an Asus Ultrabook (Asus Vivobook S500c). I tried to buy one that had all the specs I could want to run games as quickly as I could like.

Well, all I know is the laptop has never ran well. I chalked a lot of it up to running Windows 8, but then when I upgraded to windows 10, it REALLY went to shit.

    So my question is:
Where do I begin? I don't have anything on there that I need to keep. I want the laptop to run as well as the specs say it should... and generally enjoy it. I also want to be sure it's running well because I will be using it for tuning my car, and I don't need it doing anything stupid or running slow.

It has all of the best specs you can get. The i7, the SSD and the 750GB HDD, 8 gigs of ram, etc etc.

Advice? tips? good websites to use for a tutorial? I don't know where to start.

I'm going to need a better description of the symptoms. All the win 10 upgrades I have done have worked okay. The first thing I would do is make sure windows update has done all the updates it wants to. Leave the laptop on for a day and let it do its updates.

Well there are only 2 symptoms I can describe.

    1. It runs slow as balls. It acts like it only has 2 gigs of ram... not 8. And the video card is supposed to be decent, but I've played League of Legends on it before and had to turn the graphics almost all the way down for the laptop to handle it so it was playable.

    2. This one is weird, and best I can figure, it has to do with the 'hybrid' hard drive system... the switching between the HDD and the SSD. When I click on widows explorer (not internet explorer), the computer thinks for like 2 seconds, the whole screen blanks out, and the desktop reloads... windows explorer never opens. But after it does that, windows explorer will open fine. It does this every time.

Should I just wipe it and start fresh or something? I have barely used it at all.

definitely run a clean windows 10 install unless you absolutely cannot.

That upgrade is a bit funky I found, esp with drivers.

Agree with Mike2nd, fresh install over upgrade. You'll be chasing your tail trying to fix issues otherwise.

I've upgraded 6 machines from 8 to 10 and had no problems.

Fearpb and I went through the laptop yesterday with a fresh Win7 install. I may try and keep windows 7 on there... not sure if it can find all the drivers yet. Been updating all night.

I vote it's all about that hybrid drive. I had issues with the one, and only I will ever buy.

Help them, for they know not that which they do not know!
