here's a new question:

do any of these "trusted" gauge companies have astounding customer service records? like to the point of replacing gauges after over a year of use?

I run Tanabe VLS OLED, about 1 year so far, is accurate and and reliable so far. My only gripe about Tanabe is none of their gauges have a datalogging output wire.

What you want to look for, is a good gauge will usually have a 3 wire sensor, which is a powered and more accurate sensor than a 2 wire typical resistor type sending unit which only tells you the resistance value in relation to ground.

+1. All of my cars use a mechanical oil pressure gauge. Its simple, no electronics, no wiring, not much can go wrong. Heck after i rebuilt my VR4s motor back in 09 I was paranoid about oil pressure on first startup. I installed a cheap-o sunpro mechanical oil pressure gauge just to have some piece of mind during my first start but after that initial start i started to like it and just left it in the car. Its been nearly 7 years and that mechanical cheep-o gauge is still reproducible and never given me any issues. Its not fancy, it cant output a signal, and isnt digital but its never failed me.
