    MD Lighthouse Challenge 2015 - Sept 19th to 20th

    What: Maryland Lighthouse Challenge 2015
When: Saturday, September 19th through Sunday, September 20th

Starting Point: Fort Washington Lighthouse, Fort Washington, MD
    Time: 9:00 AM

What is the Maryland Lighthouse Challenge?
The Challenge is a weekend-long event in which the general public is invited to visit nine land-accessible lighthouses in Maryland. For each of the lighthouses visited, the participant will receive a complimentary souvenir. Upon completion of the challenge, you will receive a special “completer” souvenir proclaiming that “you’ve seen the lights!” In addition to the nine lighthouses, there are two out of three other bonus sites we will visit (We will not be visiting Sandy Point Shoal). Although these are not required to complete the challenge, they will be great places to visit and it makes the challenge, more challenging.

This event is only held every other year, so if you do not participate this year, you will not have another opportunity until September 2017.

For more information about this event, please visit the Chesapeake Chapter of the US Lighthouse Society website.

If anything, this is a nice long cruise where we can visit, see and learn about locations in Maryland that we are not aware of or never thought about visiting. Lighthouses are also great back drops for pictures of our cars. The cumulative mileage of the cruise is about 420 miles, not including distance to and from home, along most of Maryland’s south western and eastern shorelines. This is a great opportunity for us to do what we love doing, driving and showing off our cars. This is a rain or shine event so there is no excuse to drop out because of the weather. This is basically a free event, if you decide not to climb the lighthouses that charge a fee, except for fuel, food and lodging. Split a room to save on expenses.

3SNJ has completed the every NJ Lighthouse Challenge since we started participating in 2009 and almost completed the last MD Lighthouse Challenge, we have decided to take on this challenge again and make sure we complete it this time. All participant in all of prior events loved it and we do not expect any less here.

The locations that will be part of this event/cruise will be:

    Day #1

    • Fort Washington Lighthouse, Fort Washington, MD
    • Blackistone Lighthouse Replica (Bonus), Coltons Point, MD
    • Piney Point Lighthouse, Piney Point, MD
    • Point Lookout Lighthouse, Scotland, MD
    • Calvert Marine Museum / Drum Point Lighthouse / Cove Point Lighthouse, Solomons, MD

    Day #2

    • Choptank River Lighthouse Replica, Cambridge, MD
    • Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum / Hooper Strait Lighthouse, St. Michaels, MD
    • Millers Island Lighthouse at Dock of the Bay Restaurant (Bonus), Sparrows Point, MD
    • Chesapeake Lightship (LV-116), Baltimore, MD
    • Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse, Baltimore, MD
    • Concord Point Lighthouse, Havre de Grace, MD

The order in which we will visit each location has not been finalized yet but will be posted about a week before the event. Any change in order would be minor and would be done so to save time and/or mileage.

Updates will be made as necessary and posted.

Lighthouse location details will be posted at a later date.

The plan is the stay overnight on Friday, September 18th, in the Fort Washington area and hit the first lighthouse on Saturday morning. There will be an overnight stay on Saturday, September 19th, in Solomons, Cambridge or somewhere in between. There will NOT be an official hotel for this event. Lodging arrangements will be the responsibility of the participant.
Some suggested hotels for this event are,
Friday: Master Suites Hotel Waldorf, Waldorf, MD and Country Inn and Suites, Waldorf, MD
Saturday: Days Inn Easton, Easton, MD and Holiday Inn Express Cambridge, Cambridge, MD

The Concord Point Lighthouse will be our end point for this event. Upon completion everyone can either caravan back up north or go your own way.

Post up if you can make this event.
It sure looks stock, so it must be.
