Favorite NG Memories

I think the pace lap was the only time I've ever felt the way I felt that day. I was in the lead car with Roger Roskam, the Indy Pace Car... I remember crossing the bricks and I teared up, then I looked back, looked around, and just took it in for a second... It was so emotional, and so overwhelming. What a great experience that was.

Oh geez. Two more... One was the road course in Memphis with the St. Jude's physician in his corvette. I could do without that one. Second... having Keith come to Memphis... Awesome.

Ha! DR. Vette was my instructor for the driving school, and he was awesome in many ways. Two things I'll always remember about that driving school 1) on my 4th lap after hitting 130 mph on the main straight and wondering if I was going to make the big sweeper, he leans over and shouts " that was good, now I want you to hit 140 on the next pass". After my WTF moment, I listened to his tips and hit 141 MPH on my final lap with him. I probably would have been happy with 130 as my limit if he had not been there for support. 2) After my laps with him as instructor were over, he took me for 3 laps in the vette ('06 Z06 with coilovers and Hoosier slicks) and had me pinned up against the door glass in the twisties. He wanted to show me the difference between my KDW street tires and his race tires. One thing I really felt good about was his Z06 topped out at 140 MPH on the big straight, so our little six bangers can hang with the big V-8's no problem.

Having SCE Phil as an instructor was very cool, I think I was the only newb that was being told to go faster, not slow down because they didn't have the right tires.

Lets see, in no particular order......

1. Going into turn 1 at Memphis full blast only to find out I have NO brakes, pedal to floor.

2. Ramping off the curbing in the M's at Memphis, sideways, off the track, hard enough to smash the oil pan and subframe in.

3. Crazy Jack. It's impossible not to have a good time hanging out with him.

4. Dinner with Ray P. Not only does he drink chocolate milk with steak dinner, but the knowledge just flows from him.

5. 4+am with Greg E. Really 4+am with the entire late shift: Greg, Jason, Nate, Bridge, Zucchini if he's conscious, Kenny, I'm forgetting somebody.

6. Trying to convince the Taco Bell drivethough lady that we indeed wanted to buy 120 or 144 tacos. Nate can confirm this battle. They were gone in like 3 minutes flat.

7. Rental car madness.

8. returning the rental car after madness.

9. Setting up the autox. It's kinda a pain in the ass, but even the setting it up is a fun time to hang out. The battle between Levi and me is worth the time along, lol. He's the technical, over-prepared type, I love to wing it thinking to myself "this would be fun, this would be fun, this might be fun, this is gonna suck but I'm putting it in anyways".

10. Drunken Jenga. a Von invention that has to be experienced to understand.

11. Trunk monkey. I think trunk monkey should make an appearance while Kenny tries to autoX. I'm not responsible for rolled vehicles, lol.

12. Watching the wheel try and fall off Jason's 99 on the roadcourse. I haven't laughed that hard while driving, ever.

13. The Crazy Bimmer. Also known as Banzai Bimmer.

14. Driving Scott's checkered VR4. Once it boosts, it BOOOOOOOOSTS.

15. Eric Bowden learning that we don't tie down cars with big straps for the (not) fun of it, lol. So lucky, and his recounting of the story is pretty good also.

16. Bobby's Jenga kick.

17. Finding the local dive. Some years turn out better than others here.

18. Running taco bell out of party pack boxes. They resorted to lots and lots of bags.

19. That dumb dunk tank in Memphis with way too cold of water in it.

20. 3SX running over a tree with their trailer............prop it up, nobody will notice i swear, lol.

I'll think of more tomorrow.

Rob Lataille and the Golden Jackstand Award. He showed up in Memphis and never got it off jackstands until he was leaving... And the party bus in Memphis. Heading down to Beale at night and just kicking back. That was fun, too. Car shows on Beale, private tour of Graceland... I could keep going.

One more. Coming into the hotel in Memphis and hearing, "Ummm... Mrs. Sheffield? Does your husband wear a Speed-O??" Um.... You're kidding, right??? Me: "Uh, God I hope not. What's going on?" Them: "There are a couple of boys wandering around the property in Speed-O's. And they're... ummm... well.... 'aroused.' " Well, crap. They don't pay me enough to deal with something like THAT. That was the second year..... I can't believe I'm still here.
