Basic BPU Supra -- 11 second drag passes

So I picked up another Supra weekend before last -- '94 TT 6 speed. As such, it was my duty to take it to the drag strip for a general road worthiness check and performance validation. It came equipped with a recently-added intake, downpipe and Apex'i exhaust. Otherwise, it was pretty much all stock/original. I employed the old school bleeder T (18ish psi), a few gallons of Sunoco 110 on top of a 1/4 tank of pump 93, my trusty CCW drag pack and the "5-min true twin conversion". Results as follows:

1st pass -- knowing I had the stock (and almost certainly original) clutch, I tried to do a quick slip it out of hole around 4500RPM which surprisingly resulted in a bog. 12.0 @ 118.5MPH with a laughable 1.95 60'.


2nd pass -- Let's try a 5500RPM clutch dump in hopes of some tire spin. Yeah.. stock clutch is not impressed -- RPM's shot up and hovered at around 6500RPM until I banged into 2nd. 11.80 @ 118.8 with a 1.81 60'.


3rd pass -- I let the car cool for a good hour. I was a little less aggressive with the launch and it came out of the hole a little harder, but slipped on each gear shift... 1/8 trap was down a lot, so decided to reset the ECU before the next pass. Ended up with 11.89 @ 118.0MPH with a 1.79 60.


Oil down on the track shut things down for over an hour... Almost packed it in since the temp was dropping fast, but decided to make one last pass.

4th pass -- I had high hopes for this pass assuming I could replicate (or improve on) the 60'; the temp had dropped, and the ECU was reset assuring full timing advance. I came out of the hole pretty hard around 5000RPM and blew the tires away (for the first time).. Banged into 2nd, 3rd and 4th and despite what I knew would be a crap 60' and overall ET, I had great expectations for the MPH when near the top of 4th the bottom fell out... I was unexpectedly greeted with a terrible misfire, loss of power, etc... Coast through the traps to 11.9 @ 107MPH with a horrendous 1.91 60'...

Luckily it turned out I blew the (newly run for TTC) vacuum line off the EGCV which resulted in almost a complete loss of boost -- easy fix and no big deal..! Unfortunately the clutch stank and was pissed, the sun was going down so the temp was dropping fast and the track was gone, so we headed home.


Once gain proving the formula -- basic off the shelf BPU is good for solid 11's all day long. With the spring mod and a clutch that held mid-11's and 120MPH traps would be easy. Next up is a new clutch and some general maintenance stuff, then it will be a daily driver. For reference, my Hardtop Supra when it was BPU++ went 11.3 @ 125MPH on a less-than-perfect pass. The key differences were a clutch that held, FMIC, cam gears and spring mod.

You just have to be in the right place at the right time and ready to jump on/close the deal when it presents itself -- I'm not a believer in luck or karma, per say. I had been casually looking for an auto TT for my wife, but this 6sp happened to come out of nowhere and was relatively close (Virginia), so I had to jump on it. Like the last Supra I picked up a few years back (DJG '97 auto) it was one of those deals that presents itself that you just have to move mountains to make work in a short period of time. The car presented itself on a Saturday at like 9pm, I contacted the seller and had a deal struck by 10:30pm, drive up the following Saturday and drive it home. The next Sunday (last Sunday) had it on the drag strip and here we are LOL!

How many do you own now?

This is the 5th Supra I've owned in total, and currently makes #5 in the stable, but the 350Z is basically sold and will be in a new owner's hands shortly.

Is there ever anyone else at the track or do you somehow have private access all the time?

Ha! I've never had private access, though that would be nice! This was a regular Test n Tune/Grudge racing day at Darlington, just like every other time I've gone. I love this track and it's a blessing it's only ~70 miles away -- always well-prepped, the staff is on point and on non-event days there's typically little to no wait in the staging lanes. On the non-event days like this there's usually just legit race cars, grudge/money racers and a few 'regular' enthusiasts like me. They never show times here due to all of the money racing that goes on, though. I never got a chance to line up with anyone since the grudge racers come paired with an opponent and most of the legit cars truly testing & tuning want solo runs anyway. In other words, I didn't intentionally make only solo passes.

Low 60's for the first few passes and upper 50's on the last.

Wow that's awesome, Not that I ever run but you are lucky to get 2 or 3 runs in at our local track for Test n Tune nights anymore. I would be more inclined to race if it was like yours.
