For the garage/construction: Any shop vac with a hepa bag works fine normally

for the house:
Dyson=crap after a while
Bagless=crap from the start...

Winners use Miele canister vacuums with bags...

We have Dysons at our house. A DC25 animal for downstairs, half hardwood, half carpet, one Golden Retriever to take care of, and a DC41 for upstairs (all carpet.) Also have one of their cordless vacs, but I forget the model of it. They all work very well for what we need them to do, and we've had our DC25 for over 5 years now and our DC41 for 3 or 4 years, never had any problems with them.

That being said... if you're comparing pure vacuuming power, the Kirby wins hands down. It's simply the standard for cleaning. My mother has one, for like the last 20 years. Where the Dyson wins is for versatility and ease of use, and it gets the job done. I've had quite a few bagged vacuums in the $100-$250 range, none of them compared to the Dysons for cleaning ability or reliability.

We had Kirby here for a while and it was just a pain to deal with sturdy and long lasting but heavy an inconvenient. We use a Bissell bagless now and it does the job for us.

Lori has gone through several Vacuum cleaners at her store. Of all of the ones she has used the Dyson has done the best job. (Never used the kirby there)

For a majority of households, a Dyson would be fine. Hell I used a Dyson for the last eight years, just got the Kirby a little less than a year ago. The difference was literally night and day. But now my husband wants to put in hardwood floors LOL, so it's a mute point.

I think when people diss bagless, it's probably BECAUSE they've never used a Dyson. Again though, maybe it's not the best vacuum for you personally--but they are worlds better than your garden-variety bagless.
