I'm a Dyson fan, but it has to be the right one.

Grew up with a really good hoover that just worked. Had it for years.

Since being on my own, bought and gone through a number of sub $100 vacuums. They ALL worked excellent for a year, then they would need to be replaced. Having pets will do that.

So, two years ago we sprang for the Dyson DC65, yes we spend $600 on a pink vacuum ) and would never go back. It has lived up to the hype. Works great especially with our mixed hardwood and carpeted floors.

Now, since we loved ours so much, Tiffany's Mom followed suit but wanted to go with one that was a little bit less expense and picked up sub $300 Dyson, I am not sure of the model, but she hated it! Returned it within a week. She loves ours but doesn't want to spend that much on a vacuum.

I really need to find out what model she had.

But I will say, the DC65 lived up to the hype!

Look, I get that he likes canister (I admit, I've been confusing the terminology, but let's stick to upright and canister). The problem is, a canister has suction loss over an upright--even with identical motors. And they don't have brushes...so they won't work anywhere near as well on carpet (especially thick pile) as an upright.

His punditry on bagless vacuums is apt...except that (as I mentioned above) it doesn't apply to Dyson because Dyson's use a different filtration system. So yes, they are head and shoulders above other bagless vacs.

As compared to bagged ones? Well I'll leave you to your own experiences. All I can speak to is what I know from MY experiences...which is that my DC07 did a MUCH better job than a bagged vacuum with a new bag--even to the point where I had done the room TWICE with the bagged vacuum, and the DC07 (the third pass) was picking up stuff like the room had never been vacuumed at all.

That's my PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. I didn't buy the hype--I decided to experiment for myself...and I'm pleased about the results. I swear, some of you people remind me of all the Windows 8.1 haters who still use Windows 7--even though they've never even tried 8.1.

Ok, let's ignore the fucking industry professionals that do this day in and day out for a damn living(an absurd notion, but that's the game you're playing). What other vacuums have you used other than your Dyson?

The only ones I haven't personally used are the two high end German units, miele and sebo. However, I don't need to. There's mountains of evidence out there about both brands that shows they are absolute top quality, like a riccar.

And, I use Windows 8.1.

I remember when I was a kid, my aunt had central vac. I cant remember how well it worked but I remember thinking it was really cool.

I fully endorse uprights over everything else, and i stand by my assertion that my DC07 is the best upright i've ever used--bar none. i intend to buy a DC65 when i get back to the states, and i'll compare the two.

john deere filtration cat? not sure what you mean. the foam filter on my DC07 is almost completely non-functional; it's almost not needed at all. Wash/dry/reinstall every 6 months. that's nothing.

p.p.s.
"industry professionals" are the people who are vacuuming conference rooms, exhibition halls, and hotels for a living. the stuff they use is hardly the same caliber or quality of what is needed for home use. and i certainly don't feel like paying $2500 for a vacuum of that quality. sure it may last literally forever--but i'm not interested in purchasing a vacuum my great-grandchildren will use. and the overall performance isn't much better (if at all) compared to what i've got.

I never said anything about John Deere.

I'm not recommending (and never did anywhere) that Joe Homeowner go out and buy a Miele. BUT, I also will not accept that Dyson > *. It's simply not. The fact is there is no unbiased, empirical, data that supports such. Especially once you get into the kind of money John mentioned ($600ish), there are better options. As far as professionals go, those are the people that work on, and use, them everyday. They know more than I could ever imagine. They all say the same thing, bagged vacs are superior. There is no logical argument against the overwhelming majority of those-in-the-know; only the dunning-kruger effect.

My Diamond Series Kirby will literally outlast me on this planet. I got an incredible deal on it( $428 ). I would never pay full retail for a Kirby, as it brings me full circle that in that price range there are better options. It's only real drawback is stairs due to the behemoth bulk that is a Kirby. Heaviness isn't a problem on flat ground as it has a transmission that self propels it.
