Native American team names

Okay, I get the difference in connotation between the name 'Redskins' and other names such as Indians, Braves, Chiefs, Blackhawks, Fighting Sioux, etc.

I also know a few Native Americans, having married into the Ojibwa tribe, having tribal children, and having lived on the rez for the last 20-odd years.

I have yet to find a tribal member who is so offended at the name 'Redskins' that he/she would demand any changes; in fact, there seems to be more umbrage taken at non-tribals whose offense is presumptive and vicarious.

Why not have a national referendum wherein all tribes (who are, after all, AMERICAN CITIZENS) could have their say, in order to speak past the do-gooders who purport to speak for them?

Because that would make sense and also show that political correctness has taken over this country.

IDK man. I'm 1/4 Native (Mohawk) and grew up just off the rez. more than 60% of my highschool was Native. I personally don't care... but there was some serious hard feelings for years over another local school who's team name was the "Red Raiders" with a plains stylized chief as their mascot. A local boycott finally resulted in a mascot/connotation change after a couple decades of complaining. I believe their mascot is a pirate dressed in red or something now (I've moved from the area).

I guess where I'm going with it is just because some members of a population don't take offense at it, doesn't mean it's not offensive to all or that it's somehow less offensive.

As a side note, a lot of the sports teams back on the rez have native mascots... the difference being that the team names convey strong/proud images rather than using what has been for centuries and still is an ethnic slur.

I'd like to see the matter left to the tribes, and I'd like to see those who take offense in their stead work toward getting them the opportunity to say it for themselves.

last time I checked people liked their sports teams. in fact I don't think it's much of a stretch to say that some people have deeper feelings for their teams than their spouses and/or children. so why would they want to call their team something "derogatory"? fact is they don't and people that want to be "offended" will find a way to be such no matter what.

True! very f-ing true BUT! I don't think they care, it's all about throwing weight around and beating masculinity back as much as possible. These little wins give them more power every time. If they win this it's off to the next thing they see fit to destroy.
