How can one tell the difference between an MR trans and a normal 6 speed?

    identifying markers? part numbers?

I am looking into getting a trans on ebay and most sellers are mis informed about application. So, I am trying to determine myself via the pictures what types of transes are being sold.

I know the 5 speeds vs 6 speeds you can usually tell apart because the 6 speeds have a plate riveted to the bell housing with the part number, where the 5 speeds are stamped (poorly) into the bell housing directly.

but what about the mr vs the normal 6 speed? if it is a 6 speed and comes from japan, is it automatically an "mr" trans?

Yes all JDM 6 speeds have different gearing than the USDM 6 speed.

yes, all JDM transmissions have same gear ratio. The difference is the part number will either say GNCR or FNCR after the Wm6g1. GNCR is JDM gear ratio. To be 100% sure the ring gears haven't been swapped, you'll want to pull off the bellhousing and actually count the teeth or measure.

Chris, this is probably a stupid question, but you would know the answer. The JDM 6 speed is a different final drive which requires the "5 speed rear diff", but is the transfer case the same between the JDM and USDM?

I have heard of it before, usually with rebuilt transmissions that are in the USA already. It's not a big deal to pull the bellhousing and check.

Thank you. I figured they would be but wasn't 100% sure. Never know if I will need that info.
