Computer not recognizing CD's

Quick question. So, every time I buy a new CD I rip it to my computer so I can enjoy it in my mix when I am listening to music. Every time until last weekend the computer automatically recognized the CD and named it and each track. Now all of a sudden, it will not. Anyone have any ideas? I have tried some googlefoo but haven't been super successful.

I am running XP and if it makes a difference Windows Media Player 10.

I know that there are updates out there for Media Player 10, but there was something I heard years ago when 11 came out that kept me from downloading the update and I never allowed it to update. I am a creature of habit so every time it asks me if I want to update, I hit no.

So, is WMP10 the issue, XP, or am I just SOL?

Any help is appreciated.

EDIT: I just tried something on a hunch and the computer can in fact recognize and name the CD. I opened it in Real Player and it pulled up the album and tracks. This looks like a WMP issue. Will updating fix it? Is there any functionality loss from the newer WMP to the older?

Why are you using WMP? it's unbelievably bad. anyway cd lookup is part of the program and has nothing to do with windows. You need to get media monkey or songbird.

I was going to say clean the laser but this sounds like software issue. Maybe you accidentally tuned something off in WMP.

Check your firewall settings to make sure WMP isn't being blocked.

Also support for Windows XP has now officially stopped. They may have also stopped supporting older versions of WMP and turned off the CD lookup services. I used to use MusicMatch Jukebox and when they stopped supporting it the CD lookup function also stopped working.

Because up until a week ago I have had zero issues with it.

That was my thought as well. I can probably let it update and see if it cures the issue.
