Cool Using a Honda AEM EMS on a Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4

If anyone is looking for a cheap EMS solution you might find this useful.

    Original post: http://roycormier.net/2010/10/20/how...universal-ecu/:

The AEM EMS 30-1020 is an older Honda EMS. At the time of writing this they can be found for about $500 or less, I got this one for $400 on eBay.

Most of the Series 1 AEM boxes have internal jumpers that can be moved to change the Cam and Crank sensor types from MAG to Hall Effect. Unfortunately the 1020 doesn't have these jumpers, so some hardware modifications are necessary. So I busted out the multimeter and got to work tracing the Cam and Crank inputs.

On the 1020 the Crank and Cam sensor inputs are on pins C2 and C4. These run to resistors R11 and R30, which are then connected to ground. To use a hall-effect sensor for cam/crank input the signal wire needs to be pulled up to +5V.

I de-soldered the right leads on the R11 and R30 resistors then bent them out of the way. Then I soldered in some 2.2K ohm resistors and connected them to the right side of resistor R188.

    Then I had to change the position of jumpers JPC1 (coil 1 ), JPC2 (coil 2), and JPC3 (coil 3). I'll be using 3 coils on a 6g72 V6 doing wasted spark

And thats it for the hardware modifications, now you just need to make a custom ECU harness and you're all set.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I went down to the junkyard yesterday and picked up the Honda ECU connectors for $5.25. Then I spent a couple of hours last night making the custom ECU harness for the 3000GT VR4.

    All done.

    And it works.
