    Let's discuss our abs system

Been thinking about deleting it for the weightsave mostly but not sure if I will regret it in the long run. Why I made this thread.

Is it an advantage or disadvantage to have on the track? rainy/ or not

Also been wondering if it can be replaced with an aftermarket unit that is better and lighter. Ours is really heavy.

ABS systems are tuned to the car. If you put an aftermarket unit in, it has to be tunable, and that's some serious money for a car that isn't a serious track machine.

I'd make sure it even still works. Most of the time the pumps on our cars rust so bad, they won't even spin, so do a quick ABS stop and make sure it stays straight and stops well.

The biggest benefit of ABS is for panic situations, if this is a track only car, you probably won't need it. I can threshold brake better then modern ABS systems, let alone one that's 20years old.

IMO, if it's works and this is a street/track car, keep it. If it's a track only car, ditch it. It's not doing all that much to help you (like modern system that do dynamic proportioning).

alright thanks for that. mine looks to be in bad condition. lots of surface rust. But still works. Ditching all that weight up front sure is tempting though.

the Puma GTO didn't have it

ABS sucks. I have never liked it on any vehicle that I have ever driven. ABS only works on flat, dry, non gravel/dirt surfaces. Other than that it makes stopping distances longer if it engages.

I've only heard bad things about the ABS system on our cars. However my experience is that isn't bad at all. I've pushed my brakes to the limit on the track both in wet and dry conditions with my XYZ 6-pot 355mm brakes.

I find that it doesn't engage unless you brake really hard and when it engages it does so very smoothly. Normally my ABS doesn't even engage when I'm on the track unless I really push it.

Also if you get a set of softer compound race tires the ABS can save you big money since those tires are easily get ruined by flat spots when if you lock up the tires.

Our abs is fine on the road.....except I don't like bow long it takes to reset. When you engage it on a bump or something....it won't turn off even though it only lost traction for a second. You'll never notice until you drive a new car and use its abs.

First time you drive in the snow or gravel, all bets off. That's just me though....I'm not the creep at 10mph in a snow storm guy, I'm the I got somewhere to be guy.

Having no ABS is fantastic until that one time it is actually usefull. Then you wish you had it.

I hear ya, I drove my TT this winter on summer tires and I wish I had deleted ABS so I could have modulated the pedal better.
