They were dealer swapped after the car was ordered and built. I know 2 original 99 Vr4 owners who had it done.

The hoop was not an option.

I remember seeing Infinity logos on the speaker grilles of my old 2G so that makes sense. (Can you buy those speakers for a reasonable price?)

Good luck finding Infinity parts now. When I was trying to replace all the blew out ones (5 of the 6) in my Daytona, no one could find anything anywhere.
Those had an amplifier around the magnet on the back two speakers(and I think the same for the ones in the doors too).
I don't know if the Infinity speakers in the 3S cars were like those or not, but I would be willing to bet they were.
