    Engine Rebuild

I have an extra 6g72 just sitting in my garage. I want to rebuild it, 3.5L would be sweet, but I don't know where to buy all the parts for a full rebuild. I think 3sx sells most of the stuff but I was wondering if there was a place to get stock parts cheaper than them or some aftermarket a bit cheaper.

    The Low-Down:
I bought a 95 SL from my cousin in law for $4K, not a bad price for a 5speed. 9 days of owning the car, my dad decides it's time to change the oil. He drains it and replaces the plug, but when he puts the filter on he crossthreads it. I told him it wasn't fitting right, but he said it was fine. Anyway, I drive it the next day and sure enough, the oil drains out and it overheats. developed a bit of a knock when it shut down. It had lost compression and the filter was full of metal shavings. spent the next month in the shop until I ordered a new DOHC engine for $1K and got it put in for $1200. My dad didn't trust me to put it in my self and now i don't trust him to do oil changes. Luckily he paid for the repairs. anyway, I want the engine either gone or rebuilt, preferably turbo'ed and dropped into my car.

If you have any info on rebuild kits/parts put them on this thread.
If you want the engine, PM me with an offer.

If I were you, I would first look for a good engine machine shop. I tend to lean towards the race shops. I do not like the engine exchange type shops at all. The guys that build race or high performace type engines tend to take much better care of their customers. If you wish to save money, try to save money by doing things like the tare down your self. It is the labor that is the biggest costs. So if you have tools and time, this will be a big savings. Have the shop inspect all the components and let them tell you were you stand. I don not like re-ring jobs at all. A fresh bore with new pistons will last a lot longer and is more predictable. Your builder may sugest a .020, or .040 over bore depending on block condition. The bore work should never take place with out having the pistons in hand first. And most likely your builder will tell you that. So now this is the time to decide what your goals might be for this motor. Are you looking for just a stock rebuild? performance rebuild? or other? Your choices are endless. As far as rods, most rods can be trued up as long as they are in spec enough to do so. Things like twist and such need to be checked as well. These are things that your builder should be happy to take the time to talk to you about. If not, go elseware. Same goes for the heads. A 3 angle valve job is the norm and will be recomended, so don't think they are trying to suck money from you when they make such a suggestion. I would not go looking for rebuild kits as is a waist of money. You would be surprised to find out just how much a good builder can save you when it comes to parts cost. My build saved me 60% on the cost of our crazy valve trane components. We use Evo component sets so only come in set of 4. he however could get a set and a half as needed for a 6. LOL. I could not. Although we only went .020 over, the piston he was able to get for us would allow for a 550 lift with up to 2 mm over size valves. At a cost far less than stock oversize pistons. The draw back is simple. A good race shop will be busy doing race motors for the up coming race season for their repeat customers, and your project may have to take a back seat to them. It happens. So consider the time of year when trying to get a quick turn. We use Wells Racing. These are not Mitusubishi guys at all. Big block Dodge and Chevy is their Forte. So shop around and find out just who is in your area and does some of the best work. Go see the shop, talk to them and try to get a feel if they can support your intrests. No matter what you do with this motor, cost will be high, so it will be most importent to get the most for your money, and not try to cheap out oi your motor by getting a cheap or quick trashy build. For the curent build that we are doing, I ended up doing all the assembly of the motor our self as they just did not have the time. But That can be a savings as well. If you would like more info or would like to discuss your build a litle more, you can PM me and I will try to help. I have done this for others and don't mind being a middle man for you and your machine shop. But I hate typing and am in the middle of this other build, so phone calls take less of my time. PM for my number if needed. I hope this helps and gives you some idea of what you are about to get into. Good luck.
