It will crank and just try to catch, but die, then if I try again and I gig the throttle it will pick up.

It cranks a lot longer before trying to catch if I run less cranking ipw.

After it runs smoothly for a moment it runs mid tens afr for about 10 seconds, then starts going up and within less than 30 seconds it is at stoic.

Remember E85 only has about 70% of the energy that normal gas does so you might not need to have as much as you think pulled out.

Chris, you need to back off on the "Post start enrichment Factor" or "Post start enrichment timer" if you're needing to hold the throttle open to get it idle after initial starting. This is a completely separate factor from warm up enrichment (which I usually disable or only set to low single digit numbers).

FamilyMAN of you want to post your AEM settings, I can translate them to work with Chrome. I do just the opposite all the time for AEM guys. The start up routines are nearly identical.
The post start enrichment comp on the higher temps been reduced to almost nothing and that's working great. I have not reduced the post start enrichment on the lower temps nearly as much. That may be what it needs, I don't really want to change more than one thing at a time, especially since it is not starting *that* hard right now and I do not want to be hard on my new motor loading it up with fuel.

At the end of the day I find this startup tuning pretty difficult, I may shoot a video and send you my rom if I can't get a handle on it. Everything thing happens so quick and after the first crank the remaining data isn't really valid until the next day. What's likely to happen is the temps outside are going to keep warming up and I'll just have to deal with this next fall. The main thing is once it warms up just a bit it runs great and if I can get the DMV stuff squared away I can complete the breakin of this thing.

I appreciate all the advice though guys, it is just the difficulty of describing once happens in a few seconds while cranking and starting, and the numerous settings that can alter the behavior that it is hard to tune remotely or especially by committee. Logging isn't really helping me a whole lot as there is not a lot of published data about what I'm supposed to see in the first 2 seconds of the car coming to life and the wideband may get pegged in the first moment, making a read hard to get. I'm sure someone with a good feel for this could solve it better than I can just listening to the car.

It's not that the motor needs to warm up to run good, it's that you are relying on closed loop to do the tuning for you and there a 10-30 sec delay depending on your coolant temp.

Shoot me some logs if you need to but you're on the right track.

Thanks, I think I am on the right track.

I added 2 ms to the cranking pulse and took away 5% on the post start enrichment factor. It caught faster, but died faster after that. So, I added 2 more ms to the starting IPW and put the post start enrichment factor back where it was. It caught a little faster and I was able to keep it running, but it was a little rich for a bit.

So, I removed .2 ms from the post start enrichment timer and we'll have to see what it does tomorrow. The biggest takeaway for me is you can still learn something if you alter things before it completely fires up, rather than waiting a day, and it is really sensitive to changes. 2 ms may be all it needs, but 6 might flood it.

It's supposed to be in the lower 10s just after start up and gradually get to 14.7 after closed loop starts and the coolant temps warm up.

If you're trying to get a leaner start that won't work.

good, then except for the moment after it catches it is running right.

I think these ar3933 plugs may be too cold for me. Starting in the 50s this morning was even a little hard and I had a miss until it warmed for a minute. It isn't starting rich as far as I can tell.

I may have to try an eight series ngk.

Going for fresh fuel today to see if that helps.
