Have to do rack and pinon, should I do it when i pull the tranny to put new clutch?

Just wondered how much it will run? I can get the clutch installed for $530. (reface flywheel too). both boots are torn and I leak PS fluid because of it, but need to def put a new one in. How much am I looking at? I know I can get a reman'd R&P for about $280. how much for labor. I would do it myslef but have no means to drop the tranny and whatnot. little feedback please?

I'd do it with all of that apart. It still won't be much easier to do, the hard to do stuff is all unrelated to the tranny being in the way or not. I completed a swap in 8 hours taking my time, and eating two meals, but I had already done it once and knew what to expect. I don't know what the book time is, sorry.

My rack was $235 w/ a $150 core charge from discountsteering.com Besides blowing mine up when I turned the car on after the first swap, it works great. Still snug and firm a year and a half later. Great customer service too!

I have an NA and was quoted $788.00. That included labor, a remanuf'd rack & pinion, fluids, etc., and an alignment.

Mmmm, do a rebuild, replace both hard lines on the rack, then find a new pinhole when the fluid pressurizes again, then need to repeat the steps... (I will be soon)

It is pretty easy to do, just time consuming. NEED a flare nut wrench set. 12mm if I recall... do not quote me on that.

I have done this on a 95 TT. Because I had the rear head off, it was pretty easy, only took about 4 hours. Flare nut wrenches are a must (both 10mm and 12mm iirc). Without the rear head (or engine) removed, it can be a real time consumer to do this job. One of the harder parts of the install is getting the steering wheel centered and the tie rod ends in the correct position. My "el cheapo" eBay collision flat rate manual lists R&I at 3.2 hrs for the AWD, for what that's worth.
