Once again Eve delivers as no other game in the world can. Since currency in eve can be purchased with real money and likewise sold for real money (against EULA) it's easy to convert in-game losses to real dollars, which was around $200,000 - $300,000 in this case. The fight was between two of the largest coalitions in the game, one of which I belong to. All in all the fight consisted of around 2 - 3,000 pilots simultaneously and was the result of a simple error of not paying a sovereignty bill by the corp in charge of the solar system.
The biggest contributing factor to such a huge loss is the amount of Titans destroyed. Titans are the largest and most powerful ships in the game. One of the Titans destroyed in this battle was owned by a guy named The Khan and was worth around 200,000,000,000 isk or roughly $5,000. Unfortunately I belong to N3/PL coalition, which was on the losing end of this battle but it was definitely an epic experience to be part of this.
This wasn't the largest battle in eve but was definitely the most costly. It made news on Fox, ABC and CBS.
One unfortunate side effect is the market price for minerals has jumped up significantly as industrial pilots across the entire game are now tasked with making more Titans, which take about 3 months to build and an enormous amount of resources. This puts a damper on my alt corps capital ship assembly program but we will manage.
Here is a video recorded by a third party showing part of the battle. The entire fight lasted 20 hours until the server was shut down for daily maintenance. The video may look slow due to the time dialation caused by such large numbers. Time dialation basically slows down time in the game, allowing the server to process all the data.
For a reference to the size of an Erebus (Gallente Titan)

I've been playing Eve since early 2005 and it keeps getting better and better. Hopefully one day we can have battles like this without time dialation or lag but I'm not sure humans could actually coordinate effectively in real time during something like this via teamspeak.
