No I heard that could be dangerous. What sort of meter would I need and ill see if any of my friends have one

Any kind of multi-meter will do. Digital meters are easier to use but an analog (needle type) will work.
Specifically you need an Ohms function.
Cheappy meters are, well, cheap around here. They're crap, but if you can find one they'll do.....
