Ceramic coated pistons yay or nay?

Currently doing some freshening up on my short block and have the pistons out, they are Wiseco's and had the factory skirt coatings on them, noticed it was a little worn off probably from the typical forged piston slap when they are cold and I know its normal for some of that to wear off.

Anyways, thinking of recoating the skirts for some abrasion resistance, and also doing the crowns for somewhat of a thermal barrier, I have read some good stuff out there on doing it, but I wonder if that's really necessary. I know Wiseco is known for not swelling up as much from heat as other brands. But I figure a little extra protection can't hurt either.

    Any opinions?

Not necessary. I don't know of anybody using it on the crowns on our platform, but correct me if I'm wrong. You shouldn't see the temps where this becomes necessary.

Mahle Motorsport pistons are completely coated. They run them this way in their 8k+ dragsters and funny cars. I don't think it's needed for the output our engines produce, but it couldn't hurt if you got them coated

Unless they do a bad job coating them and it ends up flaking off.

I had mine done once and I can honestly tell you it neither helped or hindered the engine. Maybe if you ran nitrous, but personally I wouldn't spend the money to do it again.

don't know if i'd want that on pistons

have a feeling it will flake off eventually. and when it does you lose compression.

You'd lose alot more than just compression.

Its been used on a lot of racing platforms for a long time, if the crowns are prepped properly it should never flake off, but I hear ya on that.
