US icebreaker heads to Antarctic to help stuck ships

    When all else fails.

US icebreaker heads to Antarctic to help stuck ships

    Comparable ships:

According to Wikipedia, the ship has 3 propellers vs the 1 in the 2 stuck ships. Along with this, the ship has the ability to use 56MW of gas turbines to spin them. The other 2 ships combined are less than 20MW.

    Nice...

With such a sturdy hull and high power to back it up, the 13,000-ton (13,200-metric ton) Polar Star is able to ram her way through ice up to 21 feet (6.4 meters) thick and steam continuously through 6 feet (1.8 meters) of ice at 3 knots (5.6 kph).

Dunno...if i recall correctly, the nuke powered ones cant go thru warm water, or their reactors will overheat!
if you cant fix it with a hammer...then you have an electrical problem

this russian ship is pretty impressive too. the older and smaller sister of the 50 let pobedy/50 Years of Victory:
Yamal (icebreaker) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
    The NS Yamal
The Yamal is equipped with a double hull. The outer hull is 48 mm thick where ice is met and has a polymer coating to reduce friction. There is water ballast between the inner and outer hulls which can be shifted in order to aid icebreaking. Icebreaking is also assisted by an air bubbling system which can deliver 24 m³/s of air from jets 9 m below the surface. The Yamal can break ice while making way either forwards or backwards.
Yamal is one of the Russian "Arctic" family of icebreakers, the most powerful icebreakers in the world. These ships must cruise in cold water to cool their reactors, so they cannot pass through the tropics to undertake voyages in the Southern hemisphere.

    Displacement: 23,455 tons
    Length: 150 m
    2 x OK-900 171 MW nuclear reactors; 2 x steam turbines driving 6 generators, total 75,000 hp (55.3 MW)
    Speed: 22 knots (41 km/h; 25 mph) (max)
    19.5 knots (cruising)
    Propulsion:Three propellers

    for comparison
USCGC Polar Star (WAGB-10) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Polar Star The portion of the hull designed to break ice is 1-3/4 inches (45 mm) thick The hull strength is produced almost entirely from the massive internal support structure.
Polar Star has other unique engineering features designed to aid in icebreaking. At one point, an installed heeling system could rock the ship to prevent getting stuck in the ice. The system consisted of three pairs of connected tanks on opposite sides of the ship. Pumps transferred a tank's contents of 35,000 US gallons (133 m³) to an opposing tank in 50 seconds and generate 24,000 foot-tons (65 MN·m) of torque on the ship.[4] This system has since been removed due to maintenance issues.
    Displacement: 13,623 long tons
    Length: 399 ft (122 m)
    Six Alco 16V-251F diesel engines (6 × 3,000 hp)
    Three Pratt & Whitney FT-4A12 gas turbines (3 × 25,000 hp)
    Speed: 18 knots
    Propulsion:Three propellers

interestingly, that video sys the nuke powered can handle 10 feet thick, but the link says ours can do 21 feet...

Yup, the USA's ship can break 6 meters all day. That is its rated ice ram breaking of ice. Must have some thick armor on that thing.

6 meter ram, not "all day". to get through 6m we have to go back and forth to break it up. I bet LP is rated for 8-10M ram. It's a BIIIG breaker.

Vid was showing 2m constant easy, says will crush 10 feet, but I'm thinking that's constant.

it's not about the thickness of the hull, it's about the shape. same with bridge pylons. they are designed to move the ice out of the path of the ship...not just crack it.

p.s. global warming? where is your god now?
