    Swapping a 3.0 for a 3.0

I am about to get a 92 Stealth that has a 3.0 SOHC with a blown head gasket. I've wanted one for a while so I am stoked but back on track.

I have two good running 3.0 SOHC's in 94 Dodge Spirits. Rather than tear into the Original engine to find it unrepairable I am wanting to just swap long blocks.

The Spirits have the 3.0 mounted opposite of the Stealth. Transmission is to the drivers side and timing chain is next to the passenger fender in a Spirit.

Question 1. Are the Stealth 3.0's the same as the Spirit? I know I have to swap external stuff like mounts, pans, manifolds and such but does the reversed mounting of the engine mean that the engines have differences to prevent the swap? i.e. block/head casting differences?

Question 2. Any problems I am not expecting? i.e. Computer won't work with the Spirit cam, etc?

Question 3. At a later date I would like to install a DOHC or even a DOHC-TT. Is it worth the swap or better to buy a TT car already because there are too many differences to deal with feasibly.

    Thanks

    Bryan

My .02 is that it's better to buy the DOHC or TT car already.

Do what you want with the car, a DOHC TT swap would be cool, but it's done already I suppose. I am working on SOHC Turbo setup currently, I am waiting for a chance to drop off the engine somewhere to get done up. I have a build thread out there if you'd like to peruse through it. A lot has happened with the car...
Your 1993 Dodge Stealth is one of 6351 that received VIN numbers. Based on the order of the serial numbers, your car was the 5212nd out of the 6351 that were made that year.
Your car was built in the 3rd week of February 1993. Of the 47380 vehicles made at the Nayoga plant, your car was the 40537th vehicle to be created that year.
There are 281 other cars that were made with both the same interior and exterior color. There are 779 cars with the same exterior color and 2316 cars with the same interior color.
Note: The production order is assigned based on the order of the serial number.

Engines are actually pretty different between the Spirit and the Stealth, so you can't even use one on the other.

I own a SOHC Stealth and it is quick for what it is, however I see no point in buying a car that you need to find an engine for, and then plan on swapping later anyway. Besides that, the DOHC swap is not worth it because the DOHC is not much faster than the SOHC. If you are going to put an engine in now, put a DOHC TT engine in, BUT I would skip the whole process and just skip buying the SOHC car in the first place and buy a TT car to save the hassle,.

    Thank you for the info.

I got it for a real good deal so even if I sold it for scrap I would make money. Don't worry, I don't plan on scrapping it I'm just looking at options to get it running. If I can swap the 3.0 Spirit engine into the Stealth I can have it on the road in a day. Obviously I would like it if I could do that.

The DOHC or TT idea is just a "what if". I rarely keep my cars too stock for too long but I will just keep this one a daily driver and look for a TT when the itch strikes.

Stealthee, do you know of any particular differences off the bat?

Looks like my winter project may have gotten a little more intense. LOL.

It's been awhile since I looked at a Chrysler 3.0. There are actually a lot of differences. Off the top of my head. The Chrysler SOHC has the oil filter mounted on the block, whereas the Mitsu SOHC has the oil filter mounted off the oil pump. The Chrysler SOHC has a serpentine belt set up, whereas the Mitsu SOHC has two seperate ribbed belts. Intake manifold is different, exhaust manifolds are different and so on and so on.

I think it would end up being a bigger headache trying to put a Chrysler SOHC into a 3s than it would be to do a DOHC TT swap, and that isn't 100% cakework on a SOHC either.
