    1997 VR 6-Speed Rebuild

I'm pulling my spare 6-Speed a part so I can replace the middle case. On the out side it appears as if there are missing bolts. I'm sure I can figure those out but there are some black metal tabs head in place by a bolt. Are these heat sinks?

I'll get a better picture soon but could someone tell me what these are and what the function is.

those hold the wire harness, you bend them over the wires.

Okay so I have removed the bolts from the top mid and bell housing. The Shifter ASSM, the guide bolts, the reverse detent and pretty much all the bolts on the out side to the trans. I can not get the end to come off. Looking at the manual from 3SX it looks like the Bell Housing has to come off first. Currently there is a snap ring I need to remove and the speedo gear. Once those are removed does the housing come off easy? I need to remove the mid section as the one on the trans has a small hole from a bolt hitting it in the accident that totaled the car.

I've looked on the internet and so far all I have found is a guide for the 5 speed but it looks like it comes a part differently.

you don't have to remove a snap ring to remove the bellhousing. a deadblow hammer comes in handy for breaking the seal. set it up on the endcase, tap around until the sound changes slightly, then you can work it off. pull out the front diff and pinion and you can remove the midcase, working it around 1st gear.

don't forget the bolt inside the bellhousing. the 5 and 6-speed come apart very similar.

The bell housing comes off first. Do NOT start from the end case. Pull the shifter assm and the speedo gear. There is at least one bolt accessed from the inside near the throughout bearing. After that the bell housing should come off.

For the mid housing start at the poppet cover. Loosen the four bolts but do not remove the plate. Crack the seal and let the springs expand. Then carefully undo the bolts and capture the four springs and balls. Oh, and a magnet is definitely your friend for this. Take note of the different spring lengths and where they go.

After pulling all the mid case bolts, get your 1/4 drive extension rod and drive the two alignment pegs out toward the end case. You only have to drive them out enough to clear the mid case flange. Then the mid case should wiggle off without a problem.

When you say tap around do you mean on the bell housing by the seal or do you mean on the shaft? I would assume the around the seal. I saw the bolt inside the bell housing removed that, need to find something to knock the doll pin up, if it has to be knocked out. Seems the hole is a little smaller than a screw driver or 1/4 drive.

There are no dowel pins needed to remove on the six speed bell housing. To break the seal I used an exacto knife blade and tapped it into the seal with a rubber hammer to get it started, then a putty knife.

Its free, just had to give it a little tap, tap tap tap a roo. Have to say compared to a 700R4 this looks much easier. Sure there are a F Ton of gears. Given that this transmission was said to be working when the car was totaled, and I have to look it over anyway. What are the key areas I should check, last thing i'd want to do is put a bad trans in to replace my trans with a 3rd gear issue.

Damn it.. okay guys need suggestions. I had to swap the mid case no option there. But now I'm wondering how the F am I going to press the bearings in. I don't have a press even if I did looks like you need a special tool. How have you guys pressed in the bearings for the mid case?
