    Ender's Game. 4.5/10

I read the book and had lofty expectations so my score here is skewed or biased by that. The film, from my standpoint, left a lot to be desired. I am glad I watched it and there were some portions I enjoyed, but on the whole, I left disappointed.

Speaking with one in our group who hadn't read the book, their review was mostly positive.

I had a feeling that might be a letdown but I haven't read the book ether.

I know nothing about ender's game, but from the looks of the previews, looks like some pretty kid is good at strategy video games and the whole world turns to him to defeat some alien invasion? If so, no thanks.

Phantom (ed harris): 8/10. Loved the way they handled the ending. There's only so many ways you can end a story like that one, nice to see a unique one.

I haven't seen Enders Game either, but the plot you discribed is just like "The Last Starfighter", a movie from 1984.

Pretty? Eh... wouldn't be the first word I chose to describe him.

In short, there had already been an alien invasion some 50 years (IIRC) before the kid is even born. That tossed society into a "protect the planet" mode where a single militaristic body practically rules the world. The alien invasion was stopped and, for those 50 years, this militaristic entity is trying to formulate a strategy for a defense against a second attack. The kids are the future and specially selected individuals go to battle school to train to become the commanders of the armies that will save the planet whenever that attack comes.

Ender is a smart kid (I don't want to say genetically enhanced, maybe genetically selected and he's technically not supposed to exist -- both his siblings are just as smart and were considered for battle school, anyway, I forget the exact details), a good strategist, but in more ways than video games. He's chosen because of all the different character traits he possesses, because time is running short before the next invasion, and he may be the best shot they have in that time.

Battle school. Kids fighting kids. Blah blah. Graduation from battle school and the big battle. The end? I've heard this is supposed to become a franchise of sorts. I don't see it happening but stranger things have...

If it sounds at all interesting, Redbox.

Unless you absolutely love Harrison Ford. Then take your whole family.

Edit: To hit on the above post and as an FYI, Ender's Game was published in 1985. It began as a short story first published in 1977.

The Sweeney: 8/10. Those who watch Top Gear will recognize a certain part of it.

Five Minutes of Heaven: 4/10. So much potential, but it somehow didn't work for me. It's a deep movie, worth the watch if nothing else, but was confusing in parts and missed good opportunities.
