    This woman deserves a medal

Ranked No. #1 in initial quality

Idiots, simply by being idiots, seem capable of achieving randomly bad things that are beyond the imaginings of sensible people.

clone? they stopped making "real" women years ago about the same time they stopped making real men. I want to say it was some time between the Miracle on Ice and Rocky 4.

not sure what i think about it. props to her, for sure. that said...you aren't going to get 100% success rate in talking down a shooter. i'd bet that you'd be lucky to get more than 10%. i'm worried that this sets the public mind in the wrong frame with regards to dealing with issues of this sort--that "talking it out" will fix the issue. reason doesn't work on the unreasonable; using logic on al qaeda will backfire horribly.

i think of it like state politics. all states have a military (well, maybe not switzerland). use of these respective militaries is not a first-choice (well...it might be for some backwater junta, but that's not the norm). states try to address their differences and problems by use of political (read: diplomatic) exchange. the states who make the most stink--the ones who usually resort to violence first--are almost always small, disadvantaged ones who are trying to bring attention to their own plight. if this sounds suspiciously like n. korea or afghanistan...don't be surprised.

my point is, although a rational solution is preferable, sometimes it's not possible. going pell-mell for gun bans & other restrictive measures is essentially the same thing as restricting the terms and conditions under which a state can utilize it's military against a belligerent. and while a reduction in death/destruction/violence is preferable, do you really want to compromise the timeliness of a response--just because you bet the farm on "peaceful negotiations"?

    p.s.
i used to work in social services. trust me. people who are mentally unstable enough to be willing to unleash violence against random civilians--are not the type of people you can usually reason with.

Me to, and I share that belief - but to me, that just makes what she did even more phenomenal.

What she did was fan the dying but flickering ember of hope that there is an answer (other than violence) to our problems. Just a glimmer of hope.
