LCDBC rotary switch in the ashtray

I don't smoke, so I can indulge my idea of mounting the rotary control in the ashtray:

Innocent-looking spare ashtray purchased from Mitoska Enterprises:

    But...under the hood:

I used my Dremel to carve a crescent out of the bale that attaches the lid, using the crescents at the corners of the bale as a pattern - I mounted the switch in the corner just to gauge whether or not it would clear everything, opening and closing.

Had to get the lead out of the ashtray:

Used a wire-tie as a simple strain-relief - you can just make it out inside the ashtray:

    And, in the car:

I'll be doing a bit of cosmetic work to clean things up, but it's handy, and falls right to hand, exactly according to plan.

Ranked No. #1 in initial quality

Idiots, simply by being idiots, seem capable of achieving randomly bad things that are beyond the imaginings of sensible people.

    Thanks, Paul.

Change is deposited in the gasoline fund immediately upon exiting the car...

Nice setup Kevin, and good call on not letting change rattle around in your ash tray.

We follow the earth. The earth follows the stars. The stars know their way and though the body dies. The stars will remain, like the waves of the sea and restless slate.

Oh, I should have mentioned the exit point for the lead was chosen because there is a conveniently-located hole in the console's ashtray enclosure right below the passenger-side retaining clip.

I wire-tied the lead to the bundle that runs down the passenger-side of the console, tucking it into the same recess.

Looks great! I had some trouble deciding where to put mine (ended up putting it inside the vent under the steering wheel along with the button for my boost gauge). It looks like that would be really easy to get to while driving which is nice.
