It looks like you are down to doing anything you can to limp through the smog check. If you can't pass then you have a project car on your hands. You say you know what you have but the reality is you don't. You won't know the true status of the motor without tearing it down. If you can't pass smog then you need to find a DD and part this car out unless you can come up with project funds and garage space to work on it

i wouldn't worry too much about the atx--they're way cheaper to fix than a 6-speed. but yes, if you need a new motor and tranny...it's time for a new car.
